No, SERIOUSLY?

This woman can't tell the diff between the Bush "Doctrine" and a hole in her face. Listen to her face-hole's words and be afraid:

What?

FISA overview

Via Stretta's blog, here is a compelling overview of FISA, its history and the impact it will have on our lives - check it out:

Keef breaks it down

If this is even a ROUGH estimation of how the Obama camp views his FISA vote, then I'm happy.

The Rebuttal

I asked my friend Jonah what he thought of the issue/non-issue outlined in my last post - he forwarded me an article which I'll reprint here, 'cos it's brief and to the point. And I agree with the core of it... up until the author asks that anyone critical of Obama's perceived centrism "get over it". The problem as I see it with the FISA vote is that not ONE of my fellow Obama loyalists are asking WHY? Why did he feel he had to vote for it after harshly criticizing it and other tangential Patriot Act infringements?

I honestly don't know - I guess I'll write someone at the campaign and ask... nicely.

Anyway, here's that article by Trey Ellis (originally posted on Huffington):

"What If Obama Never Left the Center?"

What if Obama isn't tacking to the center just for the general election as all us good progressives would like to think, but instead he genuinely believes his positions? What if he meant it all along when he said he didn't see red states or blue states but the United States? What if he wasn't kidding when he blamed both the old guard Republicans and the old school Dems for the gridlock that has paralyzed the past decade of so? What if he really is very Christian and not just pretending, as you lefty atheists not-so-secretly wish? I can't tell you how many times I've heard friends say, "He's just like us. He can't really believe that mumbo-jumbo." (For the record I'm more of a Zen Buddhist but I think it takes a nuanced mind for a man of intellect to also be a man of faith.)

I was a little late to jump on the Obama bandwagon for many of these very reasons. I didn't find his positions, especially on universal health care, as progressive as I would have wished. Both he and Hillary seemed very much of the DLC centrist mold despite calling themselves progressives.

Paul Krugman has been writing about this for months but you Obama fans to the left of him just didn't want to listen. The same thing happened with Howard Dean. He was an openly centrist, pro-business governor, but because he was anti-war, progressives ignored his record and just assumed he was to the left of Ralph Nader.

I came around to Obama 100% only after his transcendent Philadelphia race speech. I decided I didn't have to agree with him on all the issues. And his relative hawkishness for a "liberal" I couldn't agree with more. I shudder to think of Dennis Kucinich as Commander-in-Chief. There really are bad guys out there hellbent on our annihilation and we really do have to defend ourselves. Of course that doesn't mean the use of dumb sticks as the Bush administration has done, but it doesn't mean just traipsing around with a bag full of carrots either.

Obama's strength isn't his slavish adherence to party line but his ability, issue by issue, to decide the right medicine at the right moment.

If that makes you call him a centrist then so be it. Get over it already. He's nobody's man but his own.

Pissed Pistopherson

I'm just a little mad at our next President:

NY Times article on the FISA/NSA wiretapping vote (I think login is required)

I understand that, hey, we're in the general election now, dude, and, like, he's gonna be a different candidate than he was in the primaries. And I am admittedly a battle-scarred, cynical, liberal-ass voter. But give me a break - even Hillary voted against this nonsense bill (yes, I know, she can afford to). Disappointing in light of his previous stance on the issue (filibuster, anyone?). I don't see the political "reality" in this. It's especially troubling in light of his other recent semi-significant flips.

Oh, I dunno, maybe I'm just being alarmist. But I've been so willing to fully commit to Candidate Barry, in both heart and wallet, that seeing him move to the center (as the Dems so often do in the general) just stings a bit. You wouldn't allow a good friend to get away with an analogous breach of trust without calling bullshit, right? So let's call it what it is.

I'm with my friend Miguel on this: ANY vote supporting the policies surrounding the Patriot Act is a BAD vote.

P.S. Back on offense (defense?), however - the New Yorker editors are indeed wearing asshats. Satire only works when, oh, say, more than half the country understands that Obama ISN'T a radical Muslim. Poor taste and poor judgement.

Satan, and other dudes.

Sitting here in the cave, transferring this from vinyl to CD/MP3 for a friend, thinking all manner of strange thoughts that float around when immersed in semi-Satanic J. Page ambience.

Speaking of Lucifer, went to see the Ayatollah's best bro Salman Rushdie speak in Santa Cruz the other night, courtesy of my dear friend Will, who shares a similar (questionable) taste in lit and such. Sir Rushdie is a charming, witty and refreshingly unpretentious dude! Rather than pimp his new book, he spoke at length about his modest beginnings in advertising copy, the creative inspiration he derives from the Arabian Nights and his mother's gift of gossip, among other topics - all compelling. Gracious as hell when answering questions from the audience. I want to drink whiskey with this guy! Seriously.

Anyway, Will got me an autographed copy of his new book for my BD - will advise. Looks light when compared to Verses or Midnight's Children, but in a good way.

Father's Day

And I'm all like, "Yeah!".

For reals, though - I agree (of course) that fatherhood is the quintessential responsibility in a man's life. Clearly, any mouthbreather with a boner can (help) make a baby, that doesn't make you a father. "It's the courage to raise a child that makes you a father." Indeed. I take this very seriously - maybe because it is so scary (somehow the scary things seem most important, most compelling), but also because I think my son deserves a good dad - I mean, come on! That's the LEAST I can do, no matter what else.

When I think about these Dad-things, I'm feeling less and less that my life is a reaction to my father's absence (read: forgive!) and more of a creation of my own (silly, stubborn) will and I like that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm cool with cycles being refashioned, as opposed to being broken.

So anyway, here's to present dads. Everywhere.

Man, eff the Lakers...

But eff Dave Stern & his Company men more. In light of the allegations set forth by Jailbird Tim, I'd like to offer a final venting of newly boiled annoyance at the results of Game 6 in the 2002 WCF:

Then again, no one forced them Kings to miss alla those Game 7 freethrows, so...

Wouldn't it be awesome if they had to regroup the teams and play a do-over game?

This is so my President

There are times when I listen to this guy speak and I just can't believe what I'm hearing. He just gets it.

Greets from Germany, by the way - tour has been amazing. Pics here:

If I had more time, I'd attempt to articulate how this time in Europe has sincerely changed me. However, it's on to the next show (tonight is Trier, one of Deutschland's oldest cities) and the next dicey interweb connectz. "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse..."
